Urostomy Information

A urostomy is a stoma for the urinary system.

There are commonly two types of urostomy. Namely
A) the traditional urostomy which is made in cases where long-term drainage of urine through the bladder and urethra is not possible so instead a stoma from the bladder is brought out to the surface of the body and a pouch adhered over it to receive the urine.
- and -
B) a "continent urostomy" where an artificial bladder is formed from a segment of small bowel which is then fashioned into a "pouch" which is intended to be emptied intermittently by the patient with a catheter. This form of a urostomy avoids the need for an external pouch attached to the body.
