Peristomal refers to the skin around the stoma site. Therefore a peristomal ulcer is an ulcer on this skin surface. The ulcers can be caused by a number of problems and are usually preceded by peristomal rashes. Treatment of the rash can prevent the ulcers from developing. Quite a few of today's ostomy flanges contain skin healing properties such as ConvaTec's Stomahesive in their System 2 products and other items in their ranges.
