  1. I'm delighted to announce that the Ostomyland website and it's associated forum(s), social network accounts have once again been certified as a HONcode approved member for 2015/2016. The Health on the Net code is a series of principles that I sign the site up to following and have to prove the site complies with during an annual review. Successful website get to display the confirmation certificate - which is located in the footer of the main site pages - and clicking on it brings up full details of the site reviews and how it complies with the code. I'm very proud that we have once again met all the principles as we were the first - and i think we are still the only ostomy support site run by ostomates themselves that have achieved this. You can read more on the HONcode at the Health on the Net Foundation website as well as being able to check out our entry in their Med Hunt service. Alternatively check out the footer on every page of the Ostomyland website for lots more information on the scheme, our compliance and our shiny new certificate. http://www.ostomyland.com https://www.healthonnet.org https://www.healthonnet.org/HONcode/Conduct.html?HONConduct533886
  2. http://www.facebook.com/groups/ostomyland I'm very happy to say that the Ostomyland Facebook group has now reopened with lots of our active members sending join requests within the first 24 hours of relaunch. The whole experience has been very traumatic both externally and internally. I would like to think we've learnt from it though with a change in procedure in terms of rules and accessability of them and group announcements being introduced. We've also increased the number of Admins including introducing one from the USA and a second from over the pond will be joining the gang soon. Hopefully this will be the last we will ever have such a situation arises again and at the moment the group is busy and going well. Now I just need Invision to bring IP.board 4 out so I can hopefully give the forums a boost in its software so it can better compete with Facebook in general. Fingers crossed.
  3. http://www.ostomyland.com/ostomyland/2015/04/01/closure-of-the-oland-facebook-group/ Regrettably this is not an April Fools joke. Please note that with immediate effect our Facebook ostomy support group has been suspended due to what can only be described as trolling. We asked members to please post their ostomy/stoma pictures in the comments section of their posts so that people do not get to see them in their news feeds as it was upsetting them. We hadn't banned any  pictures, removed any pictures and all types of pictures were still allowed. This is a very common rule in ostomy Facebook groups. Not all have it but a good number do. I personally thought it wasn't too much to ask of people but apparently it was as people started to do the exact opposite asking what's wrong with a stoma etc (which the answer is nothing wrong which is why we didn't ban the posting of pictures just asked for a little bit of consideration and help) and this en-masse posting just ended up antagonising the situation. In the end people were reporting photos to Facebook and this too was being abused as that system is anonymous so it's impossible for us admins to try and resolve those matters. Worst of all though was the language and the insults flying by both sides of the "debate". On top of this the admins were being abused and harassed in group and in private messaging. Racial slurs were even made against one of our admins. Repeated pleas for it all to stop by me were ignored and members were banned. Ultimately this did nothing and the situation spiralled. After talking between ourselves the admins felt there was no option but to close the group down. As this is being written members are being removed alphabetically from the group as Facebook doesn't allow for a one button delete on a group? Instead all members have to be removed one at a time. When there's 250 members left we can suspend the group. In the future we hope to re-launch the group and more details on that will be announced when available. I've said all along that Facebook groups Admin controls are just insufficient to handle large groups especially when something like this happens. This whole situation proves that matter. It's a very sad day for Ostomyland and frankly I'm ashamed of the behaviour that occurred in the group. I'm devastated that it had come down to this. The group has been open approximately five years, maybe longer and all that is for nothing now. No doubt the people involved are having a good laugh and think it's funny to do this but in the end they've killed the very group that probably helped them and/or have certainly stopped the group from helping anyone else via that format. Thankfully the message boards here still exist and are open as to is this site itself with all its information. I'm sorry to post such bad news but it was not a decision made lightly. For 18 years I've run Ostomyland and never has something like this happened. Any problems that arose were resolved with common sense. But that has not been possible over the last 48 hours despite two of us stopping up overnight to try and resolve the issues. I feel like I've been stabbed in the heart by the very people I've been trying to help. One little request for some understanding and help from the members so that both sides could continue to enjoy the group's support was just too much to ask for it seems. And that is why for the first time ever I'm shocked and actually ashamed of Ostomyland and to all the innocent members who have been caught up in this I can only offer my sincere apologies for what has been hitting your news feed over the last two days.

  12. Hello O'landers!    Just a quick post to officially confirm now that this afternoon the forums hosting account has been renewed for another year. This means the forum's hosting account now expires on June 18th 2015. (ish)     As this has been a single year renewal the cost hasn't been an issue - I've even paid it a couple weeks in advance!!! OMG! Who knew saving up could be so useful! - so there's no need for a donations drive this time but thank you to anyone who is reading this and thinking "Dang nabbit, I wanted to donate!".   Anyways thanks for your continued interest in the Ostomyland forums. It's you guys who make it what it is. Thank you.    Take care and have a great week.    Jason D. Founder / Admin Ostomyland

  15. Further to my recent on the forums.    I'm am more than very happy to accept offers of help from Loisw and Alice both of whom have been upgraded to level 1 staff status - aka "Happy Helpers".     The appeal for staff help on the forums remains open as you can never really have too many staffers on a forum with as many boards as this etc. So if you'd like to offer to help have a read of the and let me know if you'd like to chip in.    So thank you very, VERY much to both Loisw and Alice for their offers of help. I really appreciate it and I'm sure you'll all give them a hearty welcome into their new roles on the forums. Fuzzbutt is busy making a spare set of keys to the staff office as I type...    Best wishes to all.        Jason.
  16. Greetings and salutations everyone. I hope you're having a great weekend thus far. Im looking for some towards my keeping on top of Ostomyland. I've got help for the FB groups but I need some help with these forums. Next week is the one year anniversary of my Dad's death which is causing mood problems for us both at home. On top of that I'm now having to learn how to self catheter myself twice a day which is getting very uncomfortable. Im currently writing up a company page for the main site, as well as two product reviews as well as keeping tabs on the fb group (which I do have help with but I'm still involved with it). All of this is in top of my original health problems and daily load. It is, quite simply, too much and causing more issues and arguments in its own right. Initially the role would be of the "happy helper" variety rather than board moderator as I don't have the time to teach someone hope to effectively moderate the board using the IP. Board software. What does a happy helper do? Basically what a lot of members already do. Read the all the new posts on a daily basis. Greet new members Offer helpful advice where possible And most importantly alert me to any problem posts, potential conflicts I should be aware of, or any posts or questions/comments in posts which are aimed directly at me. Obvivously these are voluntary positions for which there is no wage other than my grateful thanks. You do get the happy helper staff badge though and if desired an Oland Email address which you can use to safely give out to members to email you with without having then know your personal addresses. And the next step up from HH is moderator where you do get access to Admin/moderators powers. Once I'm happy with the level of HH work I'd look towards offering a moderator position if you were interested. That would be in the future though. Applicants need to be organised (not do much for the HH role but thinking ahead to any possible moderator promotion) as well as having a good writing style and being polite and respectful on the board at all times' even in reply to difficult troll-like posts) as they would be representing Oland. If interested please pm me on the board and allow a few days for a reply depending on how much I've got on and how I'm feeling. Im very grateful for any and all offers. Thanks in advance. Jason Admin / Founder Ostomyland
  17. Today the Ostomyland Facebook Support Group broke the 1000th member milestone. Thanks to everyone who joins and supports it and thank you to our forums members on here too as without you guys Oland would just be a blank page. If you are on Facebook come and check us out. Simon, Rach, Julie and myself would love to see you there. Were getting between 5 and 10 new members joining everyday on Facebook and between 1 and 5 new members every day on the forums. Together that's just a very small percentage of new ostomates out there seeking help at a potentially very upsetting and difficult time in their lives. But maybe together we can help them complete that transition to a happy, full-as-possible life with a stoma. Thanks gang. 22. On Jan 21st it will be 16 years since the Ostomyland website project first went online on that same day in 1998.  I just wanted to thank everyone for being part of the O'land family. Things have grown way beyond my wildest expectations over the last 16 years.   This is very much an online project, we don't do many exhibitions in the real world but I feel we can be just as effective as any support group out there, regardless. What started as a single page on a personal homepage in the days of 33k dial up modems has grown into a huge community family of ostomates around the world sharing their knowledge with one another freely and many making new lifelong friends as a result. With nearly 5000 forums sign ups since 2007s fresh database wipe and well over 1.5 million page views each year on Ostomyland.com alone (not including community forums or Facebook traffic!) we get busier and larger each year and I believe were close to being the longest running independent ostomy support website on the net, if not the oldest.    Being independent we are free of sponsor commitments and can recommend any and all products out there not just ones manufactured by a specific company. The down side of this is that the website is run out of my wallet and we don't have thousands of pounds to spend on website SEO or real world events. But I feel that our ability to be unbiased is far more important. To me ostomy support should be about helping the patient adjust to their new body image and stoma care requirements rather than helping to inflate the profits of a sponsoring company.    So anyways, thank you to each and everyone of YOU for being part of the Ostomyland family as we venture forth towards the start of our 17th year online. I only provided the foundations to Ostomyland. It's you the members and followers who have built the Ostomyland community into what it is today and it just wouldn't be possible or the same without you all.    Thanks for your continued support of Ostomyland. You guys and gals ROCK!
  23. Christmas is nearly upon us again. Only 14 panic days left til the big day itself. As always we have a folder in the gallery set up especially for your Christmas pictures this year. I'll be posting a picture of our Christmas decorations once I get them up (although it will not be a good Christmas this year which such a large "Dad" sized hole at the table) and if you'd like to share your Christmas tree pictures, or any festive pictures at all then this is the gallery to upload them too.... http://www.ostomyland.org/ostomyboardipb/gallery/category/5-christmas-2013/    I'm in the process or thinking up some sort of Christmas event with Fuzzbutt. The usual badge hunt will be on I'm sure, and the Christmas theme will be activated soon which this year is the snowy "White Christmas" theme. More announcements on this as I have them.
  24. Greetings folks, First the bad news - the social groups system is dead. Long live the social groups system. It was causing major database issues, possibly even starting to break the database with it linking non-groups forums with groups forums and cross posting. Major headache. It's not going to be much of a loss as it was never really used so it's no loss in the long term. The good news, I'm HOPING the database cross posting problem is resolved, but as you know I'm no expert so I'm not 100% confident it is but thanks to everyone helping me test earlier in now confident the issue is over. Hurrah. The final bit of bad news... From what I can see the deletion of Social Groups has lead to the deletion of two active topics on the board. "My Bladder" started by Nancy, and "Christian Music" by Mark_P. I apologise profusely for the loss of your topics and everyones replies, I never like to lose content, but as this was posted within the social groups system it was necessary to lose the topics when the social groups system was closed down. However, if you wish you are both welcome to re-start the topics over if you have updates to them that you'd been wanting to post. It's purely a technical error that's left me with no choice but to delete the social groups platform for the good of the board. The poetry group was quite popular. Unfortunately the content from that was lost too but if I remember I'll create a poetry sub forum in general chat in the very near future (day or two - if I forget prod my memory please!). Best wishes, Jason.
  25. I'd just like to thank everyone who attended the Oxford meet for helping to make it the largest and most successful meet we've had to date. Not everything went 100pc smoothly but they never do at such events and the fact that it went 99.9999pc smoothly is down to the you guys. Particular thanks must go to Jenny Juliff and Sarah Squire for making the arrangements and being such excellent shepherds to the flock. Photos to follow. Some are already on the Facebook group page. And I've not forgotten about the Fuzzbutt giveaway draw. Once I've got the final list of names of attendees I'll make the draw and announce the winner. Thanks again. You guys ROCK!   Picture Gallery: As I see pictures I'll put them in here.
