Oland's "Living with a Colostomy" lifestyle now also available to buy in printed book format!

The lifestyle guide pages of Ostomyland has long been the main content of this site. It started life over 13 years ago as my hospital diaries, and once I got back home I keep more entries and started to convert all of them into a Colostomy lifestyle guide.

Today I’m pleased to be able to announce that as well as being available on this site to read for free at any time, you can now also buy a copy of the whole 104 page guide as a printed book. This option saves anyone who is surfing for a friend from having to print all the pages out themselves, and also offers the reader a permanently available source of reference on most things a colostomate may encounter on the road through life with a colostomy.

The guide is available now for £9.99, ships internationally, and is available from lulu.com. To read more, see a preview, and/or to buy a copy of the guide please visit this page:
http://www.lulu.com/...ostomy/12286713

PS The printed book version features the most up to date copy of the lifestyle guide. The guide is always available to read for free on the main ostomyland site (www.ostomyland.com) but the guide book may feature slightly different content to the pages on the site. The website will be updated with the new pages from the guide soon!

Facebook 'dislike' scam warning

Facebook users are being targeted in a scam that offers them a chance to install a "dislike" button.

The scam tricks users into allowing a rogue application to access their profile page, which then posts spam messages.

It also attempts to lure people into completing an online survey, for which the scammers are paid money.

The social network already offers a "like" button that allows people to rate other user's comments and posts.

Graham Cluley of security firm Sophos said it was the latest in a series of "survey scams" that included links to a video purporting to show an anaconda vomiting up a hippo.

"One thing we commonly see is that the message starts 'OMG, shocking video'," he said.

"And they appear to come from your Facebook friend, giving it a ringing endorsement."

The new "Pouches and Products" forum - guaranteed rep promo!

The "Pouches and Products" forum has just launched.

http://www.ostomyland.org/ostomyboardipb/index.php?/forum/174-pouches-and-products/
It's a new forum to let you tell the world about the products you currently use, and what you think about them. It's kind of like a reviews section but without the formality of having to comply to discussing certain criteria in your posts.

Why not start a thread telling us which products you currently use, what you think of them, and why you are using them? Would you change to something else if you could?

Have you come across a product that you are not too keen on? Let us know about it and why. But remember that the companies also browse these forums.... 'nuff said.

It is my hope that the forum will help people discover new products to try which might meet their needs. So, if there is something you'd want to know about a product dont forget to include that information in any posts you make!

Guaranteed Rep for Threads Created in this Forum!
To help promote the forum, every member who makes a post in forum between launch and the end of the weekend (end of Sun 22nd Aug 2010, UK Time) gets aguaranteed rep point from either myself or Kathy, and if the members feel your post is informative then they too are welcome to give their own rep points to the post. Multiple threads are welcomed in the forum, but guaranteed rep is only for the first thread created by each member.

I hope you enjoy this new forum, and find it informative and useful.

Caravanning for Ostomates

When I was but a small lad, I was taken camping with my Mum and Dad - (oh I've just noticed that rhymes lol) We had a big tent which my Dad decided to try out in the living room. Bits of rope and poles everywhere. I remember thinking "This won't work". But all was not lost, We drove down to St Ives in Cornwall and put the tent up in a big field. Wow - it was probably the best holiday I have ever been dragged on.

It seems that the enjoyment of the outdoors, fresh air and camping (of a sort) hasn't left me.

Since the day I could drive, I have towed a caravan. First it was a knackered old thing that someone gave to me, which had gas lights and a not an ounce of luxury.

8 caravans later, and after owning 3 brand new luxury caravans, we have now turned full circle and have a lovely classic caravan again. It's ideal for an ostomate. Carrying your own bathrom and your own bed - Now thats what I call the perfect prescription for a good time. No worries about leaks and smells or where to put my used bags lol. No worries about having privacy to change my bag. And the best company ever, my family and friends who are in "the know".

Being a caravan club member, I have the added benefit of knowing that wherever we stay we are going to be looked after. Good facilities and lovely scenery. When you take your home from home with you, there's no need to aquaint yourself with your accomodation. You can just concentrate on the surroundings and meeting up with old friends.

We caravan in all weathers lol
I thoroughly recommend caravanning for ostomates - in fact for anyone. - We love it..............Phil xxx

My Hero son

BUNGALOW blaze hero Jason Esgate has given burnhamandhighbridgeweeklynews.co.uk a full and frank account of his brave rescue mission.

The 23-year-old put his life on the line to save disabled Shirley Hill's life as her St Marks Road home was engulfed by fire on Sunday.

Jason, who lives in Weston, revealed: “At first I thought it was fog but then I saw the burning embers coming off the roof so I ran straight over there because I knew there was likely to be someone elderly inside.

“I banged on the front door but there was no response so I got a passer-by to help me over the back and I managed to get in.

“It was really awful inside - I had never seen anything like it and I had to get out because I couldn't breathe.

“But I went back in again and none of the light switches were working so I ran out and James gave me his mobile phone which had a torch on it.

“Then I heard a lady crying out for help so I battled through the smoke and managed to find her and I tried to take her arm but she seemed really confused and reluctant to leave because she didn't have her shoes on.

“The next thing I knew James was pulling me out but the lady still wouldn't leave. We wrapped her up in a coat but we couldn't get the garage door open so we smashed down the neighbour's fence and a firefighter managed to carry her out.

“It scared me that someone was in there and I knew it would be someone elderly. When I got there I didn't realise how bad it was and I wondered if I would find someone lying on the floor dead.

“There was stuff all over the floor so I went back and I heard her crying for help and then I saw here through the window, she was in the bedroom and didn't realise how bad the fire was.

“She couldn't walk and her mobility scooter was locked in the garage.

“We met up in the hospital later and had a hug but she didn't quite seem with it and we were all covered in soot. I cant remember what was said.

“I thought about the dangers but I just knew someone would be in there and I had to get her out the house.

“I have got bruises on my chest from trying to climb over the fence but that's nothing compared to what could have happened.

“I was in shock afterwards and in tears but it was just something that had to be done.”

This is what my brave son did - good lad Jason xxxx

Hi from Indiana

I, like many others I am seeing on this forum, am excited to have found such an informative and friendly support site. Here is my story in a nutshell:

My boyfriend, Brian, and I were on a hike July 5 at a nearby park when my lower abdomen started hurting. By the time we finished the hike, just a few minutes later, my abdomen was hurting so badly I could not stand up. Brian took me directly to the ER, where the doctor (who turned out to be a personal friend of my father's) advised me I had a perforated colon from diverticulitis, which I had not a clue I had developed. Antibiotics were attempted for a short time in an attempt to avoid surgery, but ultimately I had about 12" of colon removed and a colostomy put in place on July 7.

I have struggled finding a colostomy system that works well for me. (So far, the 1-piece Hollister Premier system seems to work best for me, but I am ordering samples from other suppliers as well.) A yeast infection developed under the seal, and I have had a terrible time trying to get that healed up (think I may have finally succeeded). I am finding the tips and suggestions from this site to be very helpful, and I am looking forward to browsing even more.

The plan is that I will have a reversal, but I am not sure when that will happen. The doctor told me it would be about 3-4 months from my original surgery, and my checkup is scheduled for Aug 18, so hopefully he will be able to give me a better idea of the time frame at that appointment. It's looking like I will return to work between surgeries, so I will definitely be browsing the appropriate threads for this topic

I look forward to getting to know fellow ostomates and learning as much as possible thru this forum.

When is an offer not an offer....

Many years ago a local supermarket would have fantastic "offers" where to buy multiple items cost more (per unit) than buying them individually. Example...one for 30p, or 3 for 99p!!

Well, today our local Tesco has adopted this practice. I was looking at cider on the shelf and there it was, the offer of the year.

"One for £2.47 OR 2 for £5"

Back to school for someone methinks!
