My Grandmas Story

In 2004 my grandmother had surgery for a Hernia were the implanted a Mesh. But there was complications and the Mesh connected to her colon and small intestines which caused A LOT of damage. 2010 She had to have 8 operations to fix the damage that the mesh did. Now 2014 she has an Ileostomy & also she had two fistula. My grandmother is 74 years old and she is really having trouble coping with these. She gets really frustrated because her Ostomy bag won't stay on all the time and it leaks and she has tried billions of products. We need help, she think she is alone in this world like she is the only person with this problem. so i started this blog for her. To help her see there is more people out there dealing with some of the same problems she is facing day by day.

At the moment she is struggling to keep her Bag connected to get body. She been using the Ostomy glue and some days it will stay on for a while and others she has to change it 4 to 5 times a day. if you have any advice on what products to use her what she can do just to help make it stick on there please please contact me. thank you for you time.

Grand-daughter, Elizabeth.

Hi Elizabeth,

I am so sorry your Grand mother is having such difficulties. Here is a link I hope you will find helpful. It is the main site for our board which has a lot of information about the manufacturers of the products we use. Please make some phone calls to them and they should be able to help sort out what products they have that can help. Call all of them if you have too, they send out samples for her to try to see which ones suit her needs. If you have specific questions please post them in the forum so everyone will see it and help. A lot of us don't always read the blogs as often as the forum.

You can also check out the United Ostomy Association of America at:

Thank you for being such a wonderful Grand daughter to search for help for her.

First of all, welcome to Oland.   I have never had that problem with bags not sticking (except when a nurse put one on But she wasn't a trained ostomy nurse).    Seriously, when I put them on  myself, I haven't had that problem. I probably shouldn't jinx myself.

But I still would speak with her ostomy nurse.   Also, does she use a barrier wipe or spray?  They make the skin sticky so that the wafer will hold  better.

Barrier rings that fit under the wafer are good too, as are the Coloplast rings that fit around the wafer.

And as Alice said, I'd check with the companies.  I've gotten some pretty good advice from them.

Good luck in solving this problem.   Please tell her she is not alone.

We're all here to support her, some with suggestions and some with just support.

And you are a really nice granddaughter to be  helping your Grandma.
